The music department offers a wide variety of opportunities available to students of all musical abilities. The core of the program includes performing ensembles, vocal and instrumental music. Students may select from a curriculum that features classes in classical and contemporary forms, including jazz bands and vocal jazz ensembles. Students have the opportunity to select classes in guitar, piano and studio technology, and jazz and rock improvisation. Any student that has an interest in music can find a course that is appropriate for their interests and skill level. Music education is not only for those seeking a career as a professional musician, music education prepares students to be informed and active participants in society as they continue their education.

Music Vision and Mission Statement

The Verona Area High School Music Department seeks to create a satisfying and challenging learning environment that encourages high expectations for success through experiences and instruction that allow for individual learning styles and cultural diversity. The learning process will be structured in such a way that the emphasis is on the student’s aesthetic experience with music. Skills taught will be aimed at enhancing the student’s ability to experience music at its fullest intent and in perspective to the other liberal arts. The ultimate goal of the VAHS Music Department is to provide all students
with the ability to be wise consumers and producers of music and life-long supporters of the arts. Through each course’s unique curriculum, all students will:

  • Develop technical skills related to music performance, honing instrumental and vocal technique through teaching and practice.

  • Increase knowledge of music history and theory through study of ensemble and solo repertoire.

  • Discover the aesthetic experience of music performance, relating music to our world and the human experience.
